Fixed Bridges
Our dentists at Patrick Toms DMD in Gainesville, Georgia will often recommend a fixed bridge to people who are missing one or more teeth. Fixed bridges fill the space created by a missing tooth by placing a false tooth in the gap and adjoining it to adjacent teeth or dental implants for support.
Bridge treatment is as much an art as it is an exact science. These fixed bridges look like the missing tooth and take its place in the mouth in order to restore the appearance and functionality of the teeth. Bridge materials can vary and may include gold alloys, porcelain bonded to a metal alloy or all ceramic material; the choice of material depends on the requirements for strength, wear and/or esthetics.
It is important that a missing tooth be replaced as soon as possible for several reasons. First, teeth support each other, so if one tooth is missing, then the other teeth may shift inward. As this chain reaction worsens, a person's bite changes in response to the pressure and problems with the entire jaw can result. Secondly, teeth deterioration can result if missing teeth are left untreated. To prevent extreme dental problems, missing teeth should be treated immediately.
