Gingivitis: Signs and treatments
Gingivitis is a term that refers to the swelling or inflammation of the gum tissue. In its beginning stages, gingivitis is fueled by excess plaque in a person’s mouth. It builds up along the gum tissue surrounding your teeth and causes them to become irritated. Often times in its early stages, gingivitis is marked by bleeding of the gum tissue during brushing.
Untreated gingivitis can progress into periodontitis. During this more advanced stage, the gum tissue actually begins to separate from teeth and form pockets, which are especially susceptible to bacteria and debris. If not treated, periodontitis can cause bone loss and destroy gum tissue. Teeth eventually become loose, and some teeth may fall out or need to be removed.
There are many symptoms of gingivitis, including:
· Bleeding of the gum tissue during or after brushing
· Inflamed or red gum tissue around your teeth
· Bad breath even after brushing your teeth
· Receding gum tissue
