Oral Sedation
Oral sedation dentistry is the process by which a patient takes a pill prior to coming into our dentist office for a procedure. Depending on the prescription that we write for you, oral sedation may provide a deeper level of relaxation than offered by conscious sedation. Often, oral sedation is a great option for patients who fear coming to the dentist office more than undergoing the actual dental procedure. Baseline vital signs are taken during an individual consultation, and your vital signs are also monitored during the dental procedure. Once your procedure is complete, you will need someone to drive you home.
The effects of oral sedatives take longer to subside than those of nitrous oxide.
Oral sedation benefits include:
-
Deeper relaxation than nitrous oxide
-
May have some amnesic effects (memory loss)
-
Economical and convenient
-
Feel relaxed and drowsy, but remain awake
Dr. Heather Ramsey, a dentist in our Gainesville office, is specialized in administering oral sedation to patients.
