Types of tooth implants
Tooth implants, also called
dental implants, are ideal for people who are missing one or more teeth due to periodontal disease, an injury or another incident that resulted in the loss of a tooth. If a person’s mouth and gum tissue are in good health, a tooth implant can be an excellent solution to completely restore their mouth and jawline – allowing them to enjoy all types of food and retain the structural support needed for a confident smile.
Types of tooth implants
There are different types of tooth implants: endosteal (placed in the bone) and subperiosteal (placed on the bone).
Endosteal implants are the most common form of dental implant. They come in various forms including screws and cylinders that can be placed into the jawline. Each implant can hold one artificial tooth, which is the only visible item. These are great alternatives for patients with bridges or removable dentures.
Subperiosteal implants are positioned on the jaw using a metal framework that is placed through the gum tissue to help secure them. Often, subperiosteal implants are used for patients who cannot wear traditional dentures or who have minimal bone height.
