Wisdom Teeth

Wisdom teeth extraction is one of our specialty areas at Patrick Toms DMD. Whether you need one or more of your wisdom teeth extracted, we have the knowledge and expertise to complete the procedure safely, comfortably and effectively.

Prior to removing a wisdom tooth, we typically numb the general area surrounding the tooth with a local anesthetic. If multiple teeth are being removed, we will often use IV sedation dentistry to ensure that our patients are in a deep state of relaxation. This sedation prevents patients from feeling any pain and often causes them to have no recollection of the procedure; however, they are still able to respond to requests and breathe on their own.

When extracting wisdom teeth, Dr. Toms opens up the gum tissue surrounding the wisdom teeth and removes any bone that is covering the teeth. Next, he will separate the tissue that connects the wisdom teeth to the bone and then extract the tooth. Following the tooth extraction, stiches are often needed to ensure that the extraction area fully heals.

Following the procedure, our staff will consult with patients regarding what to expect after surgery. Because sedatives will be administered during the procedure, an escort will be needed to safely transport a patient home.
